SUMMARY
ROR
In April 2019, I was convinced that siloed communication not only causes frustrations among peers but also brings misalignment in organizational strategies and initiatives.
To help bridge the gap without tripping over the rules and compliances, I started a monthly meetup for all UXers, researchers and analysts in the organization to come together and share. I name the group Research-on-Research (ROR) as our primary goal is sharing research insights and approaches.
DesignX
Witnessing the success of ROR, my friend and colleague Janice reached out to me asking if I am interested to plan and host an event for all designers. We both agree that the enterprise has low design maturity: all designers
And of course I said yes! With this event, we wanted to break down silos, skip one day of work, explore and learn through a variety of activities. After nearly 4 months of negotiating and planning, we (a team of 4) successfully hosted the 1st ever full-day enterprise-wide design conference DesignX in Jan 2020.
IMPACT
ROR
There were only 3 people in the room for the first meetup. But now we have over 60 people from departments across multiple locations in this community. Plus, I have a “partner in crime”, Aish, to work together on expanding our reach to have more impact.
The ROR community has been helping people connect with each other on shared research interests. Since we said no to formalities from the very beginning, it has been a safe zone for us all to speak up.
I was invited by Cindy Donohoe, our Chief Marketing Officer, to present this initiative in front of 300+ Marketing Experience professionals. Many others have been inspired to start their own passion initiatives.
DesignX
We had 80+ attendees coming from different departments across the enterprise. Some even drove in from out of Pittsburgh.
We invited 6 external design leaders from different industries to join us in celebrating design.
With DesignX, our design community is getting more recognition and our HCD problem-solving approach has been applied on a lot more corporate initiatives to transform the way we work.
